Information
Every nation around the world has its own claim to fame and
Croatia is no exception. Among the many interesting facts and figures relating
to Croatia are the following tidbits:
Whilst Leonardo da Vinci was the first man
credited with thinking up the concept of the parachute, it was a Croatian by
the name of Faust Vrancic who first decided to take the plunge, literally! In
the 16th century, Faust used Leonardo’s
drawings to create a parachute and subsequently used it for the first ever parachute
jump. The attempt was more recently repeated by an amateur parachutist - see
the parachute
video on the BBC news.
The word “necktie” or “cravat” comes
from the French word “cravatta”. A cravatta was a popular fashion accessory
in 17th century France, originally copied from the piece of cloth soldiers from
Croatia wore around their necks.
Niagara Falls was the location for the original
hydro-electric power plant built in 1895 and marked the start of the USA’s
national electric grid. The plant was designed by a Croatian – Nikola Tesla.
It’s thought
that Marco Polo was born on one of Croatia’s islands – of which there
are over 1100 spread out along the Croatian Adriatic coast, which itself stretches
for more than 5,800 kilometres.
