About Fuzine
The town of Fuzine is situated in a beautiful
valley to the south west of the mountainous
Gorski Kotar region, one of Croatia's beautiful green
oases. This valley is surrounded by the imposing
4000 ft peaks of the Bitoraj, Visnjevica and Tuhobic
mountains, offering breath-taking
views over the Adriatic and the Kvarner islands.
Fuzine
is best known for the beauty of its three lakes
- Bayer, Lepenica and Potkos. The crystal clear lake
waters are popular with fishermen from all over Croatia,
due to the bountiful fish stock to be found, especially
brown trout, carp and pike. The lakes are also enjoyed
by swimmers and divers
during the summer months with the water surface temperature
easily reaching 23° C. Facilites
are good as the lakes
hosted the Underwater Orienteering World Cup in 2007
as well as the 1988 World Championships.
Another
popular tourist (and picnic) spot close by, and within
close proximity to both the Bajer and Lepenika lakes,
is Vrelo cave. This 300 metre long
cave, estimated to be over three and a half million years
old, has artifical lighting systems installed so visitors
can enjoy wonders of the underground water stream running
through it as well as the magnificent formations of stalactites
and stalagmites.
The autumn brings the mushroom picking season, a popular local activity,
as well as the opportunity to enjoy the many rambling
and cycle trails meandering throught the area, popular
with nature lovers throughout Croatia.
During the winter months,
Fuzine is a great base for skiers with the Gorski Kotar
skiing resorts only 40 minutes drive
away. In the summer you can take your pick from
the the numerous local folk festivals; the gorgeous lakes
and their fishing and swimming facilites; a 20 mile drive
to the coast; or a visit to the Adriatic beaches only
20 minutes drive away.
All in all, the Fuzine valley is a perfect base to enjoy
both the clear mountain winter air and nature at its
finest, as well making the most of hot summer lazy
days on the Adriatic's beaches.
