Velebit Croatia – travel to the mountains and spectacular caves

Velebit CroatiaVelebit is the largest mountain range throughout all of Croatia, and home to two national parks, Paklenica and Sjeverni Velebitr.

Velebit is located alongside the Adriatic coast and stretches for over 145 kilometres. Like many other places in Croatia, Velebit is home to many karst formations. In fact, all of Velebit is formed from karst and you’ll find that the landscape consists of a variety of cliffs, gorges, and caves. It’s a beautiful landscape and the natural formations are home to many wild animals, over eight hundred species of flora as well as over eighty butterfly species.

When visiting Velebit, you’ll want to make sure that you take your hiking boots. The parks have over four hundred routes for climbing. The most popular hiking trail provides a scenic view throughout the Velika Paklenica Canyon and is a wonderful adventure. There are even bird tours available, so make sure to bring your binoculars.

The Paklenica National Park has one of the most impressive displays of karst you’ll ever see as well as over seventy spectacular caves to explore. Visitors will enjoy a trip to Manita Pec, where they can explore the cave that features structures and formations that are over eighty thousand years old. You’ll also enjoy visiting the various watermills that are established alongside the Velika Paklenica Creek.

Some of the most popular sights for tourists visiting Velebit include the Well on Baske Ostarije, the Historic Roads of Velebit, Pisani Kamen and the Carsko Vrilo Fountain.

The Well on Baske Ostarje was built in 1845 and continues to work to this day. The Historic Roads provide a wonderful glimpse into Velbit’s past. Be sure to make a point of visiting Emperor Joseph’s Road, Teresiana Road, and King Charles Road. Visitors invariably agree that a stroll along the Historical Roads offer one of the most beautiful scenic views throughout Velebit.
